That's Right, Pilot Fans - I'm Back!
By Wally, Portland Pilots mascot
Dear OYSA Members,
After a five-year sabbatical and realizing that my heart was in Portland, I, the beloved University of Portland mascot, sailed back to the University of Portland campus! I realized my true calling was to be a supportive riverboat captain, cheering on the Pilots as their mascot!
With that, I have made several improvements in order to keep up with the other mascots around the nation. However, not all this time was spent in the weight room. I took this opportunity to travel the world and visit many of the hometowns of our student-athletes, including those that hail from other countries. To check out more on where I have been, go to www.portlandpilots.com/wallypilot.
I made my debut appearance at UP on Aug. 28 when the Pilot women's soccer team took on Cal. That day I was given an official soccer jersey, complete with my name on the back. The Pilots won the game, 4-0. I hope all of those goals had a lot to do with the fact that I was back on campus cheering them on to V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!
Currently, the women are undefeated, with a 7-0 record. The Pilot men's team has been staying tough with a 3-1-1 record, including a 2-1 win over the Washington Huskies on Thurs., Sept. 17. Oh, how proud I am to be a Pilot!
Don't miss our next, big, action- packed weekend of Pilot soccer. On Fri., Oct. 9, at 7 p.m., the Pilot men take on the University of San Diego. Then on Sat., Oct. 10, at 7 p.m., the Pilot women battle Gonzaga.
I would love to see all of you at our upcoming OYSA Day game on Sun., Oct. 11, when the men take on Loyola Marymount University. On that day, there will be all sorts of fun Pilot stuff to do. The men's team will be collecting used soccer gear to help soccer teams in Belize who do not have their own gear to play with. Be sure to bring any used gear to donate that day!
Also on OYSA Day, there will be a Sparq Training Zone where you can compete in different speed, agility, and obstacle courses. You could win a prize for being the fastest person to complete a drill. You'll have to beat me first, though!
Finally, you don't want to miss the post-game Autograph Zone. To order your tickets, visit the Pilot Box Office, M-F, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., or call 503-943-7525. Tell them your friend Wally sent you and don't forget to mention OYSA. Being an OYSA Member gets you tickets for just $3!
Come cheer on the Pilots with me! I will be looking for you so I can give you a high five.
P.S. Check out a picture of my cool new Pilot soccer jersey!
