Oregon Youth Soccer Association Announces new TOPSoccer Chair

Oregon Youth Soccer is pleased to announce the appointment of Simon Date as the Oregon TOPSoccer Chair and OYSA’s representative to the Region IV TOPSoccer Committee. Simon will take over the position from John Hanna, who has stepped down from the position effective May 15, 2015.

OYSA would like to express its appreciation to John Hanna for his many years of dedicated service to TOPSoccer in Oregon, in US Youth Soccer’s Region IV, and in US Youth Soccer nationally. John has been a big part of the Oregon TOPSoccer scene. He helped organize several programs and has delivered training to many of our TOPSoccer coaches and administrators. In addition to assisting others to establish programs, John ran a TOPSoccer program in Tualatin for many years. Building on the pioneering work of Diane Smith, John Hanna has helped to establish a solid foundation for the future development of TOPSoccer in Oregon.

Oregon Youth Soccer believes that in Simon Date, we have found someone who can build on the foundation established by Diane Smith and John Hanna to extend the reach of TOPSoccer to more of the children in our state who can benefit from access to a recreational program. Simon is uniquely qualified for the position of TOPSoccer Chair. He is the parent of a special-needs child and has been working as a Special Education instructor in the Scappoose School District.

Simon is currently the Director of Coaching of FC Columbia County, based in St. Helens. He is a nationally licensed coach who has a demonstrated track record in establishing and organizing soccer programs. In addition to his work in soccer, he has worked in marketing for several major companies, including adidas and Apple Computer, giving him a thorough understanding of marketing and social media communications. He will look to bring those skills to the world of TOPSoccer — strengthening connections among existing programs, encouraging clubs to begin their own programs, building bridges to other programs that serve the same children, and raising the awareness of TOPSoccer among the families of children who could benefit from participation.

US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a community-based training and team-placement program for young athletes with disabilities, organized by youth soccer association volunteers. The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl who has a mental or physical disability. TOPSoccer in Oregon is operated by member clubs of Oregon Youth Soccer with support from the Association.
