Tickets Punched to the Land of Enchantment
The 36th annual Oregon State Cup concluded on Sat., May 8 with 14 championship finals for U12 through U18 teams. Teams from clubs throughout the state converged on the Tualatin Hills Rec Center soccer fields for two purposes: win a State Cup championship and earn a place in the Far West Regional championships in June.
The day opened with the THUSC Neon playing the Oregon Rush for the Girls' Under 18 championship on field one. The Neon, on the strength of an early goal, held on in a hard-fought contest between two quality sides for a 1-0 win and their sixth-consecutive State Cup championship.
Cascade FC of Salem took home two State Cup titles as the Boca Juniors captured the Under 13 Boys' title with a 3-0 win over Southside, while their Under-15 boys, the Atlas, captured their second title with a overtime victory over FC Portland Navy.
Another defending State Cup champion, Eastside United Liverpool, gutted out an overtime victory against the Oregon Rush Nike team in the Boys' Under-18 finals, 2-1.
Newcomers Willamette United Arsenal and Rogue Valley SC Adrenaline played an exciting, action-packed match that saw plenty of goals before Arsenal came out on top, 3-1.
State Champion teams and the finalists in the Under-12 and Under-15 boys' divisions advance to the next step on the journey in the US Youth Soccer National Championship series — the Far West Regional tournament, June 21-27, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A total of 225 teams will be playing for the right to advance to the National finals in July.
